Hello
everyone welcome back to my last vblog. Before starting this class, I didn’t
really know so much on teaching to second language students. I knew the concept
of it but I did not really know the details. Taking this class has taught me
more on to teach and approach these children in a way that will make them
successful. Throughout this entire course I’ve learned how ELL students take in
the information and what researchers think is best way to teach them. I learned
as teacher we need to provide all the support to EELs so that way they can
become successful and become proficient at English. Wright (2015) mentions that “all teachers must
have an understanding of theories and research related to how students develop
proficiency in a new language” (p. 48). This is why as teacher we are responsible
for that students learning.
This
country is very diverse, as a teacher chances are you will have encounter with
a student who is an ELLs. I feel more prepared taking this class. I feel like I
am not going into a class not knowing anything about ELLs student. As a teacher
I feel comfortable with practicing the skills I’ve learned over this course. As
a teacher I will make sure I have visual in my classroom for students not only
does it help ELLs students as well think all learners can benefit from visuals.
This class gave great amount of information on ELLs, I think it was a great balance
of information. Another key thing I learned about this class is when you received
a student who is an ELLs you have to take things in consideration according to
wright you have to think about the student background such as, (1) language and literacies
used at home; (2) ELP level; (3) educational history in the home country and in
the United States; (4) length of time in the United States; (5) reason for
immigration; (6) number of siblings; and (7) parents’ educational history,
employment, and proficiency in English and other languages (Wright, 2015, p.
23). Receiving information like this about your student will help you
learned more about your student and learning more about your students helps you
as teacher with making the students successful.
Overall, this class has taught me helpful
information for my future classroom. I as a future teacher feel that this class
was very beneficial to me, I will take this knowledge I have learned and use it
in my future classroom. When I first started this course I did not have much
knowledge on ELLs. Looking back at my videos I can see growth in what I know. I
feel like every student should been given the same amount of effort regardless
if there first language was English or not. I have always thought this even
before this course but, learning from this course some teachers do get
frustrated and give up easier on students who are ELLs which is sad. I know I
will not be one of those teachers.
